Don’t Let Heat Sneak Up on You

Colorado’s weather can be deceiving. A sunny 75° day may feel perfect for riding, but between the sun, dry air, elevation, and hours in the saddle, your body can overheat faster than you think.

Heat illness often starts with subtle warning signs: muscle cramps, excessive sweating, dizziness, headache, or nausea. If ignored, it can progress to confusion, loss of coordination, or even heat stroke—a medical emergency.

Keep yourself rolling with a few simple habits:

  • Acclimate if you can. If you’re coming from a cooler climate, try to arrive in Denver 10–14 days early to give your body time to adjust to the elevation and temperature.
  • Hydrate before, during, and after your ride. Water is essential, but for rides lasting longer than an hour, add electrolytes to replace the sodium and minerals lost through sweat. Sports drinks, electrolyte drink mixes or tablets (like Nuun, Skratch Labs, LMNT, or Liquid I.V.), and hydration packs are all great options.
  • Sip consistently. Don’t wait until you’re thirsty. Aim for a few sips every 10–15 minutes, and increase your intake if temperatures climb.
  • Dress for the conditions. Lightweight, moisture-wicking clothing and sunscreen can help keep you cooler and protected from the sun.
  • Ease up if you feel off. Slow your pace, find shade, and cool down with cold water or ice.
  • Know when to stop. If symptoms don’t improve—or you feel

confused, faint, or stop sweating—seek medical help immediately from the CommonSpirit Health onsite medical team.

The goal isn’t just crossing the finish line—it’s feeling good when you get there. Stay ahead of the heat, fuel your body, and enjoy every mile. We’ll see you at the finish!
